Is there anyway to reuse old fruit and vegetables to produce energy for the global energy crisis?

Some of the stores around here have made a deal with farmers. They have bins in the store that they dump produce in that is picked up for animal feed and/or compost. This saves the store on dump fees. The bins are not accessible to the general public, so sales of fresh produce is not hurt. After the animals have digested the produce the dung can be collected for methane production.
